Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
I am a general dentist - catering to a wide range of dental needs - who desires healthy mouths with strong teeth and gums for all. Aloha Family Dental opened its door to the community on December 5, 2005. Our dental office continues to be “the place” to find personalized dental service.

What was your vision when you first started your business, and what is it now?
My wife, Debbie, and I moved our family from Hawaii to establish a dental practice in this growing community to serve the dental health needs in a caring, safe and professional environment. Against the trend in dental care of impersonal, high volume clinics, our office remains a place to find personalized service delivered at a pace that is comfortable for each person.

What is the best part of doing business in this community?
We were first drawn to the rolling hills, beautiful homes and wonderful schools for our children. We have a very knowledgeable, concerned and health-conscious community. We enjoy working with our patients to treat their dental health problems and maintain their optimal dental health.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?
At work, I am in daily contact with my community of patients; they inform me of their lives and general health, as well as their dental concerns. I am involved with the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce, and have been an advertising sponsor of the athletic and theatrical publications for Oak Ridge High School. Through membership in the American Dental Association, California Dental Association and Sacramento District Dental Society, I have participated in the Smile for Kids program locally with Dr. Vickie Sullivan.

Why is your staff the best in the business?
Our staff is dedicated to the dental health needs of our patients. Our front office goes the extra step by helping patients with their insurance claims. The hygiene staff strives for all of our patients to have healthy, clean mouths. The assistants are professional and caring.

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?
I respect and admire all of the married men in my practice whom do their very best to be dedicated fathers and loyal husbands. Hearing what they do with their families, and how they handle the challenges of life, helps me to remain dedicated. Lately, my own children have inspired me with their strength of spirit and dedication to their lives.

And finally, customer service is…?
It is catering to the dental needs and desires of our patients. We try our best to listen to what our patients want, and work together to make their mouths feel and look comfortable.

Joy in Balance

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
My health coaching practice is all about educating and supporting people to live and age vibrantly. The need to serve people and educate them has always been with me. I’ve always been fascinated by health and the mind-body connection so I am constantly reading books and experimenting with different modalities of healing. My family nicknamed me “Dr. P” years ago.

What was your vision when you first started your business, and what is it now?
At first my vision was more focused on women entering the peri-menopause phase of life and supporting them to deal with the changes that occur. While I have a specialty in this area of health, I really want to keep my practice open to helping anybody – men, women and children who want and need to improve their health. I am excited for people to feel fabulous no matter what their age.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?
As a mom of two children, I volunteer at school once a week. Three years ago I joined a grassroots effort to build a children’s museum in the Sacramento region, and I’ve been on the board of directors ever since. In the coming year I hope to start volunteering at Mercy Hospital.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?
Besides raising my two beautiful daughters, I am most proud of taking my vision of starting this business and turning it into a reality, through education, discipline and perseverance. It’s never too late to reinvent yourself.

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?
My husband Matt – he inspires me to follow through on my ideas. He is a dynamic, inspiring and hard-working leader. I am in awe of all that he has done in the Sacramento region.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?
I get on the phone with one of the cohorts in my Coaching Circle. They are powerful women who constantly remind me of living my best life.

And finally, customer service is…?
Listening intently to what my client’s needs are and supporting them in every way possible to get the results they want.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
Fitness Together is a clean, private, one-on-one, personal training studio. Our studio is designed with individual, fully-equipped, luxury training suites. The built-in individuality of our studio provides a focused and intimate environment necessary for a niche segment of the population who does not want the crowds, lines, or the exposing nature of a small or large gym. Our trainers are well-educated, professional, friendly, and able to focus every moment of every session on the client without distraction. Everything we do is based on commitment, accountability, personalization and privacy. It defines what we do, and what we don’t do. We are like the anti-gym.

The Fitness Together franchise found me through a professional exercise science organization. When I took a closer look I discovered it represented 80 percent of what I was seeking as I was developing a vision and plan for my business.

What was your vision when you first started your business, and what is it now?
When I started this business I was eager to fill the gap between public gym-like space and home exercise rooms. My business was to provide a new place to go for people whom were either weary of gyms, would never go to them, did not have or did not use the personal exercise room at home, or realized that they needed the privacy, accountability, focus and professionalism, to reach and sustain their fitness goals. That vision has not changed. Our time in business and our focus on client service has allowed us to improve service in ways that make sense for our clients. We began offering one-on-one weight loss and healthy eating coaching to new clients in 2008; and, we have invested thousands of dollars so that now we integrate formal evidence-based life and wellness coaching into our service.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?
We support The Center for Violence Free Relationships (formerly The El Dorado Women’s Center), and El Dorado Hills Little League. I personally volunteer as a track and field coach at Oak Ridge High School, and my family donates to smaller school and classroom-based efforts as we receive them. We also give through our church to support numerous ministries in El Dorado County. I am a former Ambassador and strong supporter of the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce.

Why is your staff the best in the business?
I know that our staff is the best because our clients tell us. Our staff understands that it is all about the client and the relationship. Sets and reps are important. Their qualifications are without question, but they understand that we deal with real people everyday. Our trainers understand that the people who walk through our doors are there for something much greater than sets and reps.

And finally, customer service is…?
The customer should always leave an interaction feeling it was more positive than negative.
