Dante’s on the River is a quaint little Italian restaurant guaranteed to satisfy your appetite. Located on the outskirts of Pollock Pines, literally right on Highway 50, Dante’s is warm and inviting with the swift-moving American River in its backyard.
For our appetizer, we selected the garlic toast and their cheese toast, both of which were so tasty that I couldn’t resist having multiple slices. Both breads were piping hot and full of flavor without an overpowering garlic taste.
For the main course I had a huge bowl of lasagna (it was literally baked in a bowl!), which was over-the-top delicious. My guest ordered the shrimp scampi, and let me tell you, it was no run-of-the-mill scampi. The shrimp were huge and cooked to perfection, and instead of soaking in a bowl of butter – they were drizzled in an out-of-this-world creamy, herb butter sauce. I’m happy to report they were definitely the best shrimp scampi that I’ve ever tasted. Dinner was served with antipasti and Caesar salad, both of which were excellent (the salad dressing was fantastic and not heavy on the mayo, but still full of flavor). And the marinara sauce was fresh and well seasoned.
For dessert we shared a triple mousse cake that was heavenly (I couldn’t turn down the chocolate cookie crust). Dante’s is well known around town for their handmade chocolates, so I couldn’t resist ordering some for the ride back down the hill. The assorted chocolates were to die for, especially the cinnamon chocolate. The ganache was velvety smooth and the cinnamon packed a little punch (but not in an overwhelming way). The chocolates were also misted in gorgeous golds and purples looking almost too beautiful to eat!
Next time you’re on your way to Lake Tahoe, stop at Dante’s and have a bite or two. Or three!
